Winter & Williams Band – Hills and Shadows (Self Released) | Track Review

Hills and Shadows W&W

3 stars

These guys have had themselves a busy 2014 having released their third EP (EP 3), played extensive live dates in and around Cardiff including HUB Festival and a charity gig for CLIC Sargent (children with cancer). They have also received considerable radio airplay from the likes of Amazing Radio, BBC 6 Music, Nation Radio and BBC Radio Wales to name a few.

The end of the year saw a new single from them further affirming their prolific output.

The tranquil feel of this song parallels favourably with its subject matter; soft voices and mellow instrumentation conjure up idyllic pastoral visions and a poetic account of a looming romance. Most noticeable is some beautiful counterpoint in the guitar playing which melds nicely with the delicate string arrangement; this really would be a joy to see live.

There are some perceived flaws however. Whilst the lyrics and melody are otherwise tastefully rendered into the overall sound, they could have perhaps continued to a more affecting build up towards the end. The verse leaves us anticipating a high point that never fully reveals itself and turns out to be slightly underwhelming.

Still, a stirring piece of music of which there will be undoubtedly more throughout 2015.
